Mayor Brent and Jennie Taylor Service Award

2023 Winner

Payson City Mayor Bill Wright

The late Mayor Brent Taylor of North Ogden gave a live of service to his community before he was tragically killed in November, 2018 while serving a second tour to Afghanistan with the Utah Army National Guard. Major Taylor had just been reelected to a second term as mayor when he accepted his deployment.

Brent Taylor practiced what he preached: service above self. Whether as Mayor of North Ogden, or Major in the Utah National Guard, he dedicated his life to serving his community and his country. His wife, Jennie, and their seven children continue his legacy through activity in civic, faith, and community groups. Brent served on the ULCT Board of Directors prior to his final deployment to Afghanistan. He helped modernize the organization’s structure and set the League on a new path to more thoroughly address the needs of Utah’s municipalities with transparency, accountability, and focus. ULCT has created this award to honor the Taylor’s tremendous sacrifice and dedication to service. Jennie was the final President of the ULCT Auxiliary and a frequent attendee at ULCT conferences. She works tirelessly continuing a legacy established with her husband to honor country and community through service.

The Mayor Brent and Jennie Taylor Service Award is given to a Utah mayor or council member who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to serving their community. Nominations will be accepted from individuals affiliated with municipal government (elected, staff, or ULCT affiliate) and in good standing with ULCT. Nominees must also represent a city or town in good standing with ULCT.

Mayor Wright is a remarkable leader whose authenticity shines through in everything he does. His unwavering dedication to his responsibilities is a testament to his character. He is deeply involved in the community, consistently demonstrating his genuine care for its residents. Mayor Wright's tireless efforts and sincere approach to his work make him a true asset to the community. CONGRATULATIONS Mayor Wright!

A Piece of Santaquin's History

The town of Santaquin was settled in the spring of 1851. At that time it was called Summit Creek, as it was located on a ridge between Utah and Juab counties. Due to Indian hostilities in 1853, the settlers were forced to leave their homes and move to Payson. In 1856, Summit Creek was permanently settled. The name was changed to Santaquin in 1875, after an Indian chief who befriended the settlers.

Historic Downtown Payson

The Latter-day Saints first settled in Payson in 1850.  The Payson Tabernacle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated by Wilford Woodruff in 1872. In 1873 a High School was established in Payson, the first such institution in Utah south of Salt Lake City. It closed down in 1876 due to the rise of Brigham Young Academy. An opera house was built in Payson in 1883.

In the late 19th Century a factory making horse collars operated in Payson.
